How CLAT works — the four stages

Before registration: eligibility and dates

Before anything else, confirm you meet the eligibility criteria and note the key dates. For CLAT UG 2027, the minimum qualification is 10+2 or equivalent with 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/PwD). There is no upper age cap. The CLAT 2027 registration window runs from 3 August 2026 to 31 October 2026; missing it means waiting for the next cycle. Read the official notification carefully, since fees and requirements can change between cycles.

Preparation: syllabus, pattern, and previous papers

Effective CLAT preparation starts with understanding exactly what the exam tests. The syllabus is passage-based across all five sections — CLAT is not a knowledge recall exam but a reading and reasoning exam. Once you understand the format, work through previous year papers, starting with the 120-question papers from 2024 onwards, to identify your weakest sections. The exam pattern page explains the marking scheme and how to allocate your 120 minutes across sections for maximum score.

Exam day: admit card and logistics

The Consortium UG instructions say the admit card can be downloaded by logging into your account; the release date is to be announced. Whether a printout or a digital copy is needed at the centre is being verified, so read the admit card and test-day instructions when they are released. The admit card will carry your centre and reporting details.

After results: counselling and NLU preference filling

The CLAT 2027 result date has not been announced. For reference, the CLAT 2026 result was declared on 16 December 2025. After the result, counselling is run in rounds by the Consortium. Do not simply rank NLUs by NIRF position; consider city, fee and facilities. Read the counselling instructions for the deadlines that apply to you.
