The CLAT Syllabus 2027 spans five sections — English Language, Current Affairs & General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques — all tested through passages of up to about 450 words. Section-wise Syllabus
Each table below covers one CLAT 2027 section as the Consortium describes it. The Consortium does not publish a topic-wise list or topic-wise marks, and neither do we.
English Language
Passages of about 450 words, from contemporary or historical fiction and non-fiction. The questions test how well you read the passage.
Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
Passages of up to 450 words from news and journalistic sources. No legal knowledge beyond the passage is needed.
Legal Reasoning
Passages of about 450 words setting out fact scenarios involving legal matters or moral-philosophical questions. No prior legal knowledge is needed.
Logical Reasoning
Short passages of about 450 words, followed by questions that test how you handle arguments.
Quantitative Techniques
Questions follow passages or other text and tables carrying numerical information. The mathematics is at 10th standard level.
How to Use This Syllabus for Preparation
A syllabus is only as useful as the preparation strategy that surrounds it. Here is how to translate the section-wise breakdown above into a structured daily routine.
Give the two highest-weighted sections their share
Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs carry 28–32 questions each, about half the paper between them. Plan enough time for both. English and Logical Reasoning are 22–26 questions each, and Quantitative Techniques is 10–14 questions, so do not ignore it.
Treat the syllabus as a passage-reading map, not a textbook index
The Consortium describes passage-based questions in every section. For Legal Reasoning, no prior legal knowledge is needed: you practise reading passages that contain principles and applying them to facts. Structure your preparation around reading practice, not chapter revision.
Map each week of preparation to specific syllabus sections
Divide your preparation time into weekly blocks, each focused on one section. This stops you from preparing generally without tracking coverage.
Use mock tests to identify syllabus gaps, not just measure scores
After each full-length mock test, review your accuracy by section against the syllabus above. If one type of passage keeps costing you marks, you have a specific gap rather than a general weakness. Targeted re-practice is more efficient than re-doing entire mocks.
Track syllabus coverage explicitly every week
Keep your own checklist of the skills listed above and tick them off as you cover them. At the end of each week, note what remains untouched across all five sections.

What is the CLAT 2027 syllabus?
The Consortium lists five sections: English Language (22–26 questions), Current Affairs including General Knowledge (28–32), Legal Reasoning (28–32), Logical Reasoning (22–26) and Quantitative Techniques (10–14). The paper has 120 questions of one mark each, in 2 hours, with 0.25 mark deducted for each wrong answer. Passages are used in every section.
Has the CLAT 2027 syllabus changed from 2026?
As of 19 September 2026, the Consortium has not announced a change to the CLAT 2027 syllabus or pattern. Reform proposals from the expert committee target CLAT 2028 and are unconfirmed.
Which sections carry the most marks in CLAT 2027?
Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs including General Knowledge carry equal weight, 28–32 questions each, about 25% of the paper apiece. Together they are about half the paper.
Is there any prescribed textbook for the CLAT 2027 syllabus?
The Consortium pages we read do not prescribe a textbook. Because the paper is passage-based, focus on reading comprehension, current affairs through newspapers, and applying rules from a passage to a set of facts.
How much prior legal knowledge does Legal Reasoning need?
None, according to the Consortium syllabus: no prior legal knowledge is needed. You identify the rules and principles in the passage and apply them to the fact scenario.
What comes under Current Affairs for CLAT 2027?
Passages of up to 450 words drawn from news and journalistic sources. The Consortium says the section tests awareness of contemporary events of significance from India and the world, arts and culture, international affairs and historically important events.
How should I prepare for Quantitative Techniques?
The Consortium says the questions use 10th standard mathematical operations: ratios, proportions, algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation, applied to numerical information given in passages, tables or other text.
Is English Language grammar-heavy?
The Consortium describes the section as passage-based comprehension: main points, inferences, summaries, comparing viewpoints and the meaning of words in context. It does not describe separate grammar questions.
How long are the passages?
The Consortium describes passages of about 450 words in English, Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning, and up to 450 words in Current Affairs. We have not confirmed the number of passages or questions per passage.
