What NLSAT is
NLSAT is the entrance test the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, uses for its three-year LL.B. (Hons.) programme. That programme is for people who already have, or are completing, a bachelor’s degree in another subject: engineers, economists, historians, commerce graduates, anyone who has decided on law after a first degree.
Admission is competitive. The three-year LL.B. has 120 seats, filled from the NLSAT rank list, with the reservations NLSIU notifies each year.
How the test works: Part A and Part B
NLSAT is a pen-and-paper test with two parts, taken in one sitting.
| Part A | Part B | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Objective, multiple choice | Written: short answers and an essay |
| Tests | Reading comprehension, current affairs, critical and legal reasoning | Structured writing and argument |
| Marking | Negative marking of 0.25 for a wrong answer | Evaluated only for candidates who do well enough in Part A |
| Role | Screens candidates for Part B | Combined with Part A for the final rank |
The two-stage design matters for preparation. Part A decides whether your writing is read at all, so it has to be secure. Part B then separates the shortlisted candidates, so it cannot be left to the last month. Most CLAT-style preparation covers only the first half of this.
How NLSAT differs from CLAT
- Who sits it: graduates for a three-year law degree, not school leavers for a five-year one.
- Writing: Part B is written and assessed. CLAT has no written section.
- Reading level: passages and arguments are pitched at graduates, and current affairs questions expect adult context, not just recall.
- Preparation time: most candidates are studying or working, so preparation has to fit around a full week.
A fuller comparison and a preparation plan are in How to prepare for NLSAT.
What the NLSAT Programme covers
- 01Part A methodReading comprehension at graduate level, legal and critical reasoning, and a current affairs habit built around the year’s legal and public affairs.
- 02Part B writingShort-answer technique, essay structure and argument, practised with written feedback.
- 03NLSAT-pattern mocksFull tests in the NLSAT format, covering both parts, with review.
- 04Built around a working weekScheduling designed for graduates in college or in work.
Fees and how to register
The indicative fee is ₹45,000. It is a standalone programme, not an add-on to a CLAT course. No payment is collected yet. Register interest and we will write to you when dates and the final fee are confirmed.
Preparing alongside work or college
Most NLSAT candidates are final-year students or working graduates, so preparation has to fit into evenings and weekends. A sustainable week has three parts: a short daily news habit, objective practice on three or four evenings, and one longer weekend block for written practice.
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Daily, 30 minutes | The news, with attention to legal and constitutional developments; notes by theme. |
| Three or four evenings | Timed reading comprehension and reasoning sets, reviewed. |
| One weekend block | A short-answer set and an essay written to time, then reviewed. |
| Final weeks | Full tests, both parts, in one sitting. |
The full plan is in How to prepare for NLSAT.
Why Part B needs its own preparation
Graduates are used to writing, but not to writing a structured answer to an unseen question in a fixed time. Part B rewards a clear position stated early, reasons that support it, honest treatment of the strongest counter-argument, and a conclusion that follows. That is a trainable skill, and it improves fastest with feedback on your own answers.
Who it is for, and who it is not for
You have a bachelor’s degree in any subject, or are in the final year of one, and want NLSIU’s three-year LL.B.
You are preparing alongside college or work.
You want practice in the written Part B, not only the objective paper.
You are in school and want the five-year BA LLB. That is CLAT: see the CLAT options.
You are a law graduate aiming at an LL.M. That route is CLAT PG: see the CLAT PG page.
