The PM Vishwakarma Yojana, launched on September 17, 2023 — the birth anniversary of Vishwakarma, the deity of craftsmen — is a Central Sector Scheme with a budget of Rs. 13,000 crore over five years (2023–28). The scheme targets traditional artisans and craftspersons working in 18 trades including carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery, weaving, shoe-making, and goldsmithing. It provides beneficiaries with a recognition certificate and ID card, skill training, toolkit support, collateral-free credit at concessional interest rates (up to Rs. 1 lakh in the first tranche and Rs. 2 lakh in the second), digital transaction incentives, and marketing support.
The scheme is intended to strengthen the traditional artisan economy by integrating beneficiaries with the formal financial system and with digital platforms for e-commerce. A key aim is to preserve traditional craft knowledge that is at risk of being lost as younger generations move to non-craft occupations. The scheme uses the Vishwakarma portal for registration and benefit delivery, with Aadhaar-based identification.
