AIRAWAT (AI Research, Analytics and Knowledge Assimilation Platform) is India's national AI computing infrastructure, deployed under the National Programme on AI and overseen by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The system is intended to provide shared computing resources for AI research and development by government agencies, academic institutions, and startups. AIRAWAT secured a ranking among the top 75 supercomputers in the world on the TOP500 list in 2023.
India's broader AI governance framework includes the IndiaAI Mission (2024), approved with a budget of Rs. 10,372 crore over five years, which encompasses seven pillars: AI computing infrastructure, foundation model development, a datasets platform, application development for priority sectors, future skills development, startup financing, and safe and trusted AI. The safe and trusted AI pillar is intended to develop India's approach to AI regulation, which as of 2024 had not taken the form of binding legislation, unlike the European Union's AI Act which became law in 2024.
