The passage

Eight people — Anand, Bhavna, Chirag, Deepa, Eshan, Farida, Gaurav and Hina — live on eight different floors of the same building, numbered 1 to 8, where floor 1 is the lowest and floor 8 the highest. Each of them speaks a different first language among Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, not necessarily in that order.

  1. Q1. Who lives on floor 4?

    1. Deepa
    2. Anand
    3. Hina
    4. Gaurav
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Gaurav

From clue (i) Chirag is on 6; from (ii) Anand is on 3 or 9, so on 3. From (vii) Farida is on 5 or 7 and from (viii) Gaurav is on an even floor below her. From (iv) and (ix) Hina is on an odd floor with Bhavna three above. The only consistent arrangement is Eshan 1, Deepa 2, Anand 3, Gaurav 4, Hina 5, Chirag 6, Farida 7, Bhavna 8. Floor 4 is Gaurav.

  2. Q2. Which language does Hina speak?

    1. Kannada
    2. Telugu
    3. Odia
    4. Gujarati
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Kannada

On the final arrangement Chirag on 6 speaks Tamil, so from (xi) the Odia speaker is on 4 and from (xiii) Bengali is on 8. From (xvi) Telugu must be on an even floor, leaving only 2. From (xiv) the Gujarati speaker is two floors above the Kannada speaker, and with (xii) and (xv) the only fit is Kannada on 5 and Gujarati on 7. Hina, on floor 5, speaks Kannada.

  3. Q3. How many people live between Deepa and Farida?

    1. Three
    2. Two
    3. Five
    4. Four
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Four

Deepa is on floor 2 and Farida on floor 7. The residents of floors 3, 4, 5 and 6 — Anand, Gaurav, Hina and Chirag — live between them, so four people.

  4. Q4. Who lives immediately below the Bengali speaker?

    1. Farida
    2. Hina
    3. Chirag
    4. Gaurav
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Farida

The Bengali speaker is Bhavna on floor 8. Farida occupies floor 7, immediately below.

  5. Q5. Which of the following combinations is correct?

    1. Anand — floor 3 — Marathi
    2. Deepa — floor 2 — Odia
    3. Eshan — floor 8 — Punjabi
    4. Gaurav — floor 4 — Kannada
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Anand — floor 3 — Marathi

Anand lives on floor 3 and speaks Marathi. Deepa on floor 2 speaks Telugu and not Odia; Eshan is on floor 1 and not floor 8; Gaurav on floor 4 speaks Odia and not Kannada.

  6. Q6. If all eight residents were rearranged so that they occupied floors 1 to 8 in alphabetical order of their names, beginning with floor 1, who would then occupy the floor that Chirag occupies at present?

    1. Chirag himself
    2. Eshan
    3. Gaurav
    4. Farida
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Farida

In alphabetical order from floor 1 upward the residents would be Anand, Bhavna, Chirag, Deepa, Eshan, Farida, Gaurav, Hina. Chirag presently occupies floor 6, which in the alphabetical arrangement would be occupied by Farida.
