Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon was the founding Director of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (1986), which pioneered the five-year integrated law degree and the national law university model. He went on to be the founding Vice-Chancellor of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata and the first Director of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal. He was awarded the Padma Shri (2003) and, posthumously, the Padma Bhushan (2020).

Upendra Baxi, one of India's best-known legal scholars, was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (1990–94) and of South Gujarat University, and later taught at the University of Warwick. He co-wrote the 1979 open letter on the Mathura case that began the campaign for rape law reform, and wrote The Indian Supreme Court and Politics and The Future of Human Rights.

A Bombay lawyer, D.F. Mulla wrote authoritative commentaries still revised and used today: Principles of Hindu Law, Principles of Mahomedan Law, The Code of Civil Procedure, The Transfer of Property Act and, with Sir Frederick Pollock, The Indian Contract and Specific Relief Acts ("Pollock and Mulla").
