CLAT preparation from Class 10: a two-year roadmap
If you are in Class 10 and already thinking about law, you have the most valuable thing in CLAT preparation: time. The trick is to use it lightly. This roadmap covers the two years from the start of Class 11 to CLAT at the end of Class 12.
Why start early, and why start light
CLAT is a reading test more than a knowledge test. Every section is built on passages, and the skills it rewards, reading quickly and accurately, following an argument, applying a rule exactly, improve slowly. Two years of steady reading beats one year of intense cramming.
Starting early only helps if it lasts. A Class 11 student who tries to do Class 12-level preparation burns out by the winter, or lets school slide. The right load in Class 11 is about an hour a day.
The summer after Class 10
The break after Class 10 boards is the easiest time to start. Use it to learn what CLAT is and to begin three habits.
- Find out how the exam works: five sections, 120 questions, two hours, and a quarter mark lost for each wrong answer.
- Start reading one editorial a day and one long article or book chapter a week.
- Try a few Legal Reasoning passages to see whether you enjoy the kind of thinking law requires.

Class 11: build the foundations
The goal of Class 11 is habits and methods, not scores.

Class 12: move to exam practice
Class 12 is when preparation becomes exam practice. Because the habits are already built, the year can focus on timing and review.

A note on the exam pattern
A student who starts Class 11 in 2027 sits CLAT 2029. The CLAT Expert Committee has proposed a new three-section paper without General Knowledge for future years, but nothing has been adopted. The safest plan prioritises reading, legal reasoning and argument analysis, which appear in both versions, while keeping a light news habit. The latest position is on the CLAT 2028 page.

The most useful thing a parent can do in Class 11 is protect the habit, not push the hours. A daily newspaper at home, conversations about the news, and a calm attitude to early scores do more than extra classes. Watch for signs of overload, especially around school exams.
