The gap is the master element of critical reasoning: once you identify it, assumption questions become straightforward, strengthen and weaken questions become mechanical, and inference questions become questions about what the closed universe of the argument supports.

Valid inference vs. merely suggested: An inference is valid if it follows necessarily or most reasonably from the passage's stated facts and reasoning. Something is "merely suggested" if it is consistent with the passage but requires additional information or assumptions to reach. CLAT inference questions frequently include one option that is merely suggested alongside the correct option that is actually supported — and the distinction is often subtle.
Example: A passage argues that rural electrification has improved literacy rates in three Indian districts where comparative data is available. A valid inference: "Rural electrification may have a positive relationship with literacy rates in these three districts." An invalid inference (merely suggested): "Rural electrification improves literacy rates nationwide." The passage does not establish a national-level relationship or claim the three districts are representative.
